Choosing an attorney is one of the most important relationship decisions you will make in your lifetime. It can be a daunting task if you go in blindly. So, what should you look for when selecting an attorney to represent you?
It is important to seek an attorney who has experience in the legal field in which you are seeking advice. However, don’t count out new attorneys just because they don’t have as many years under their belt. New attorneys often have passion and drive that makes up for fewer years of practice.
Your attorney is likely going to see you on your best and absolute worst days and you will share with them personal details you may not share with even your closest friends. It is difficult to be able to be open with a person you don’t like, so its important to connect with your attorney on a personal level.
Trust is an obvious quality for an attorney. If you can’t trust them, you shouldn’t hire them.
Legal advice can be costly, but the work an attorney will do for you is extremely important and worth the cost. Ask questions up front about retainer costs and hourly rates and communicate early on any financial concerns you may have. You attorney may be able to direct you towards resources to help with your costs.
When looking for an attorney, asking for references from friends or family is a great place to start. Checking social media pages of the firm for client reviews is another option to get direct client testimonials about their experience with the attorney.
