The Ohio Department of Heath reported in May that 51 Columbus residences, most of them rentals, must be vacated because of lead hazards.
Columbus city attorneys and public- health officials say they are preparing dozens of cases against landlords, who have been ordered by the city to remove hazardous lead paint from their properties but have failed to do so. By keeping our clients informed, the staff at Lardiere McNair will do what we can to educate our clients so they can prevent avoidable claims. However, in the event claims are made, we stand ready to assist and fight for our client’s rights.
Lead poisoning is an often overlooked, serious issue that can be fatal. Central Ohio has been discovered to have some of the worst cases of lead poising. Research shows that at any given time in Franklin County about 5,500 children younger than 6 suffer from lead posing. Children’s lives are at risk from the lead based paint on the walls in their homes. The children are poisoned when they ingest paint chips or inhale paint dust.
There are a couple of different ordinances operating in central Ohio to help bring this issue to the forefront. Columbus has the most homes on the state’s order- to- vacate list. The City of Columbus started working with the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development to reduce lead levels in homes. Enforcing state laws and addressing lead problems is a focus of various agencies and should be of concern to every landlord and management company.
If you need help navigating through the process of making sure your properties or dwellings are safe, LM is here for you. Lardiere McNair has a team of attorneys that put our clients and their needs first.
