In 2018, there were roughly 65,067 reported car accidents in Ohio. Of these accidents, 17,853 resulted in injuries to at least one person, and 498 resulted in a fatality. (statepatrol.ohio.gov/statistics). Unfortunately, some automobile accidents are inevitable. But, as an Ohio driver, how can you avoid the car accidents that are preventable?  You may not be able to control the acts of others, but you can control what steps you take after an accident.  Lardiere McNair is here to help you, your family and your friends recover the compensation you deserve at the hands of a negligent driver.

Distracted driving has been a hot topic since the technology advancement of texting. Under Ohio law it is illegal to use a handheld electronic device to write, send, or read a text-based communication while driving on any street, highway, or property open to the public for vehicular traffic. (codes.ohio.gov/orc/4511.204). Texting and driving is not the only form of distracted driving that can lead to car accidents, however. Distracted driving includes some of the following activities:

  • Using a smart phone to follow directions, surf the web, or browse social media;
  • Eating;
  • Personal grooming;
  • Reading;
  • Adjusting the music;
  • Talking to other passengers.

Distracted driving is not only a commonality amongst new drivers, it is an everyday behavior that affects all drivers regardless of age or experience. Next time you get behind the wheel of your car stay mindful of the distractions listed above.  You are not only putting yourself at risk of a car accident, but the drivers and passengers on the road around you.

If you do find yourself in the unfortunate situation of a car accident and need advice about how to recover compensation for your injuries or how to minimize or protect against your potential liability, please contact Lardiere McNair to assist you.
