A Scary Halloween: Legal Horror Stories
Chad Stonebrook
November 15, 2019

Many of our clients try to do the right thing when handling their own affairs, but due to the lack of some basic advice, they fall short of their goals.  Unfortunately, some of these situations create “Legal Horror Stories”.  Please let our lawyers and staff keep you from experiencing the unnecessary horror from a task almost done right.  With a little help from Lardiere McNair, we can help you avoid your own Legal Horror Story.

Horror Story 1: You filed your LLC with “canned” documents, and you failed to observe proper corporate governance.  Not only did you waste the money on filing for the LLC, but you may end up personally liable for your LLC’s obligations.

Horror Story 2:  You thought you had full coverage on your personal and business insurance policies, only to realize that your agent did not understand your needs.  When you finally make a claim and use the insurance you’ve been paying for – it gets denied.

Horror Story 3:  After your divorce or dissolution is final, you fail to change the beneficiaries on your insurance, bank accounts, and other investments. A death occurs and your benefits do not go to whom you intended.

Horror Story 4:  You think estate planning documents like wills, trusts, and advance directives are for retired people. Unfortunately, an unexpected death occurs, and you end up in probate court.

Horror Story 5:  Your 30-year-old video game playing son moves back in with you. (Sorry – we can’t help you with this one.)

Horror Story 6:  You bring your real estate contract to your lawyer to review after you have signed it. Now there is no easy way out.

Horror Story 7:  You try to handle your own auto accident case because you think you are in good hands.  By the time you realize you need help, too much time has passed, witnesses have disappeared, and your time for bringing a claim has expired.

Horror Story 8:  You think you cannot afford a lawyer; only to find out too late that most of our initial consultations are free of charge.
