Each year many of us make resolutions that are desirable but are not as practical to accomplish. Below are some easy to accomplish resolutions that will not only make you feel accomplished, but will help protect yourself, your family and your business.  On behalf of all of us at Lardiere McNair, we wish you a safe and Happy New Year.

1.  Get a will or update your current estate planning documents. If you do not have a will, get one.  If you do currently have estate planning documents but have not looked at them for over two years, you should have it reviewed.  While you are at it, consider other elements to add to your estate plan. Do you have a trust?  Do you have a living will and other advance directive documents?  Is your house titled properly?  Are the beneficiaries on your insurance policies, bank accounts and other assets up to date?
2. Set up face-to-face meetings with your trusted advisors. Meet with your insurance agent, accountant, financial advisor and lawyer.  These meetings will ensure everybody is on the same page when it comes to your protection.
3. Get a free credit report form from each of the reporting agencies. Look it over carefully.  Take action if something is suspicious.
4. Visit your primary care provider for a yearly checkup. If you don’t have a primary care provider – find a provider in your area and set up an appointment.
5. If you own a business and did not meet with your lawyer last year, schedule an appointment with him/her. Ask if you should incorporate if you have not done so.  Ask what documents you should have each year so your corporation stays in compliance and provides your assets the proper amount of protection you are entitled to.
6. If you belong to a legal plan, take advantage of your benefits. Many plans pay for initial consultations or provide reduced fees for basic financial needs.
7. Locate and organize all your important documents and account information. Consider sharing the information for safekeeping with your spouse or trusted advisor.
8. Protect yourself from identity theft. Organize your passwords for your devices and subscriptions. Should you change passwords?  There are helpful password manager applications that will store your passwords in one password-protected location . These applications also assist you in creating new, more secure passwords for your accounts which is an essential step in protecting your personal information.
