Lardiere McNair & Stonebrook, Ltd.
New Year…New Scam
Chad Stonebrook
January 17, 2020

No matter where we go or what we do, we always end up signing our names.  Along with our signature, often we are asked to transcribe the date as well. If you’re like me, if the date were November 25, 2019, you’d write something like “11/25/19”.  However, the New Year has created new problems with that date format, and many law enforcement agencies have already issued warnings.

Because the current year is 2020, you might write something like “11/25/20”.  Writing the date in that format is a problem, because it is easily modifiable.  You intended to indicate that the date was November 25, 2020.  However, someone with a motivation to change that date could easily manipulate the year so that it reads November 25, 2019 or 2021 simply by adding a few numbers.  In the legal world, this could have widespread impact.

Lardiere McNair recommends writing out the complete “2020” in all documents of importance, rather than abbreviating to “20”.  If you or your business wants to discuss ways to protect yourself from fraud, please contact the lawyers at Lardiere McNair.
