As litigators we know that every case is a blend of preparation, precision, and poise under pressure. Interestingly, so is golf. What may seem like a leisurely sport can mirror the courtroom in more ways than most realize.
I enjoy golf for many of the same reasons I enjoy litigation. On the golf course, each shot is a calculated risk. You assess the terrain, anticipate hazards, and choose your club with intention. In litigation, the same principles apply. Whether drafting pleadings, conducting discovery, or cross-examining a witness, every move must be deliberate. You weigh the facts, anticipate opposing counsel’s tactics, and may need to adapt your approach to shifting dynamics.
Golf also teaches restraint. The temptation to swing hard and fast rarely yields the best result—just as aggressive litigation without a clear strategy can backfire. The best trial lawyers understand that finesse often wins out over force.
Both golf and litigation demand endurance. A trial can stretch for days, even weeks, testing your focus and resilience. One misstep—a poorly phrased objection or an overlooked exhibit—can change the outcome. Golf humbles you in the same way. A single errant shot can derail an otherwise memorable round. The key is staying composed, recalibrating, and executing the next move with confidence. And, unlike the typical TV lawyer stereotype, a healthy dose of humility goes a long way.
At our firm, we see golf not just as recreation, but as reflection. It reminds us that litigation is not about bravado—it’s about discipline, ethics, and strategic execution. Whether we’re standing on the tee box or before a judge, we approach each challenge with clarity, respect for the rules, and a commitment to excellence.
