Lardiere McNair, LLC – Personal Injury from Auto Accident: What is “Med Pay”?

Medical payment coverage, or “med pay” is a type of automobile insurance coverage that pays for personal injuries sustained by you or passengers of your vehicle due to an auto accident. Med pay money can be used to pay for medical treatment expenses, emergency services transportation, co-pays, and/or health insurance deductibles related to your injuries caused by the accident.

The personal injury team at Lardiere McNair focuses on collecting med pay money from the automobile insurance quickly so that our clients are able to pay medical bills from their accident in a timely manner. Once we have received the med pay money on behalf of our client, we work with our client to find the best way to maximize the med pay money.

Some strategies we discuss with our client to maximize med pay money include:

-              Making sure our office receives the med pay money instead of the medical providers directly. Once our office receives a med paycheck on behalf of a personal injury client, it is put into a trust account where we pay each medical bill that is submitted to us by the client out of their trust account.

-              For our clients who have health insurance coverage, we advise them to have their health insurance pay the medical bill prior to us paying the bill with their med pay money. Most health insurance agencies are given contractual adjustments when they make payments on an insured’s medical bill. If the health insurance is given a contractual adjustment, the amount of the medical bill is lowered. Further, health insurance will also pay all or a portion of the medical bill’s remainder. After (1) the contractual adjustment and (2) payment by health insurance, the balance on the medical bill that the client must pay will be a significantly lower amount. Thus, allowing us to use the client’s medical payments coverage to pay a much lower amount.

EXAMPLE:

  • Not submitted to health insurance prior to using med pay:
  • Med pay coverage amount = $3,000.00
  • Medical treatment bill = $3,000.00
  • Med pay money remaining to pay other medical bills = $0
  • Submitted to health insurance prior to using med pay:
  • Med pay coverage amount = $3,000.00
  • Medical treatment bill = $3,000.00
  • Contractual adjustment for health insurance - $1,000.00
  • $3,000.00 - $1,000.00 = $2,000.00 remaining balance
  • Health insurance payment on remaining balance = $1,500.00
  • $2,000.00 - $1,500.00 = $500.00 remaining balance
  • Med pay money used to pay the remaining balance on medical bill = $500.00
  • Med pay money remaining to pay other medical bills = $2,500.00
